After a long bus journey, we finally arrived at the Tayto Factory. We were welcomed by the tour guide Lenor, who took us to explain a little about what would happen during our visit. Mr Pat Tayto then entered the room and we got our picture taken with him. Shortly after Mr Pat Tayto left, we put on our aprons, hair nets and were separated into two groups. The guides told us all about the history of Tayto and how the packaging had changed over the years. It was now time for our tour, we all lined up in pairs to go into the factory part of the building. We were taken into to potato store, they needed to be kept in very cold, dark conditions so they didn’t rot. Next we went to see where the potatoes were washed and shot upstairs to be cut. Upstairs we watched how the potatoes were cut into very thin slices and cooked. We tasted the warm crisps with no flavour and watched the Cheese and Onion flavour being packed into boxes. There were many flavours we were able to try. We also saw how the hand cooked crisps were made. Shortly after we all had to answer one question correctly to get our free Tayto six pack. I really enjoyed my trip to Tayto Castle!

One of Bloomfield’s most famous ex-pupils paid a visit to School recently …Christine Bleakley who was Head Girl in 1997 was here to film a short piece for her early morning programme, ITV1’s Daybreak.
All the presenters of the show visited their old schools to mark the end of the school holidays, and Christine’s visit to Bloomfield coincided with the start of a new term for the girls.

There was much excitement as Christine and the crew filmed the piece throughout the day. Her first stop was the art room, meeting up with her former art teacher, Mrs Shearer, and she got a real surprise when Mrs Shearer revealed some of her original A-level art work that she had kept in School all this time!

Next stop was the Assembly Hall for the choir, which Christine enjoyed during her time at School. After singing with the girls, and a catch up with Mrs Ross, her former music teacher, the whole School assembled where Christine addressed the girls speaking very fondly of her time at Bloomfield. She was also presented with a handmade print as a gift from a very talented A-level art student

A quick change of clothes after lunch and Christine was in the Sports Hall with PE teacher Mrs Willis, playing netball, her favourite sport at School. She hadn’t lost any of her skills and even managed to score a few times.

Lastly, she met up with Dr Neill, our former Principal, who visited the School specially to see her. After a short ‘interview’ where they reminisced about her time in the School, he presented her with her A-level certificate which she had never picked up all those years ago! He said, “Christine was an excellent Head Girl and, as with all the girls who leave here, has carried the caring ethos of the School with her to her chosen profession.”

At the end of the day’s filming, Christine said of the visit, “I have such fond memories of this School, the smells and sounds are exactly the same as I remember them, as is the real caring family atmosphere. I thought it would be really strange coming back, but it’s as if I never left!”

Dr Darrin Barr, current Principal said, “All the staff and pupils had a great day being involved in filming the piece which was aired in early September. Bloomfield is very proud to have such a famous former pupil, and we hope that Christine will return to School again soon.”

Christine’s visit can still be watched at Day Break.

On the 26th September we celebrated the European Day of Languages within school. To start the day off, we had a special assembly in which two A-level French students conducted a quiz, testing our language knowledge and awareness.

Throughout the day, some members of staff demonstrated their linguistic skills by using another language within their lessons. We had rooms around school labelled in French, German and Spanish. Meanwhile, in the canteen at break and lunchtimes, students were able to mingle with our Language Assistants who gave out stickers.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the delicious Year 8 French breakfast of hot chocolate and pain au chocolat. A fun day was had by all and, hopefully, students were made more aware of the important role that languages play in our world.

The competition took place on the 5th October and was held in the offices of the law firm Allen & Overy. The lead up to the competition proved to be very busy with lots of evidence gathering and rehearsing for our presentation on Asylum Seekers. When the day of the competition arrived, a healthy mix of nerves and adrenaline was felt by all, especially when faced with the judging panel and 100-strong audience. Our presentation went very well and was commended by the judges and applauded by the audience. We didn’t win but we were proud to make it as far as we did. We learnt many new skills throughout our competition journey and all agree that it was a brilliant experience and one that we will never forget. Another highlight of our visit to the capital was our trip to the musical Billy Elliot and visit to the Jack Wills store in Covent Garden both of which were very enjoyable.

Dance in Bloomfield Collegiate School commenced with much excitement in September as the Intermediate Dance Team, after winning the regional final, prepared to go to Scarborough to represent Northern Ireland in the Festival4stars competition.

The team performed brilliantly and, although they did not win, everyone enjoyed the experience and it was great to see such talent from all around the United Kingdom. Both the Junior and Intermediate Dance Teams are now rehearsing in preparation for the competition next year and hope to retain their title.

This year has also seen the introduction of GCSE Dance into the
curriculum as an extra option for Year 11 and 13. This is a great way to explore many new styles of dance and to gain experience in musicality, performance and commitment.

This year we decided to embark on a new adventure in the Spanish Department, and held our first ever Spanish Immersion weekend! We packed the minibus full of enough supplies to feed an army, and headed to the North Coast with staff,10 excited/nervous AS and A2 girls wondering what lay ahead…

Our aim was to “immerse” the girls in Spanish from beginning to end, which began in the minibus as they enjoyed music, singing and speaking ‘Spanglish’. English, however, was left at the door of the Youth Hostel and over the two days, the girls participated in a variety of language activities: Argentinian cooking, games, songs and language workshops.

All in all, it was a worthwhile experience and hopefully one we can repeat in the future!
¡Hasta la próxima!

On 22nd November, seven pupils travelled to London with Mrs Greer and Mrs Redpath to watch the men’s ATP World Tour Finals. The event was held in the O2 Arena, a truly remarkable venue which showcases tennis in a vibrant and innovative way.

After watching an entertaining game of doubles, the girls were treated to a virtuoso performance from Roger Federer over a subdued Rafa Nadal in front of a crowd of 17,500 people; the atmosphere was electric.

We began the next day with a shopping trip to Harrods after which we headed to the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park with its German Christmas market. Next on the agenda was a trip to Westminster and the London Eye. Whilst there we abandoned the idea
of travelling underground and boarded the Thames Clipper for a trip along the river to the O2 Arena.

Before the evening tennis session, the girls had the opportunity to chat with some of the Barclay Ball Kids, then settled down to watch Novak Djokovich play David Ferrer; Ferrer won this encounter in straight sets. On Thursday morning we hung out with the stars at Madame Tussauds.

The afternoon tennis session featured Roger Federer against Mardi Fish. This was a closely contested match going to three sets before Federer stepped up a gear and showed us his full repertoire of shots. That evening we watched the awe-inspiring musical, The Lion King, at Covent Garden – a fabulous production. Finishing the trip off with shopping in Piccadilly and Regent Street was something everyone enjoyed. The trip was a great experience for all involved – one to be repeated!
